It is possible to configure such that the XFree86-supplied shared
libfreetype.so is not built or installed.  From my reading of this
thread, this is the main point of complaint -- a buggy version of this
library getting installed.

The server-side freetype backend module contains the freetype code,
so an externally supplied version isn't used in the case.
