I guess keith's site just dosn't have good pagerank on Google, I found what I was looking for here: http://keithp.com/~keithp/talks/ Now that I've re-acquainted myself with these papers, let me go back to my original question. Is there any way to coax Xfree into using the second hardware cursor for a drag-icon? My understanding is that win32 makes use of the second hardware cursor for this kind of thing when it is available, and that's a large part of why it's so smooth to drag icons (even with alpha). It seems like this would work much better as a completely server-side operation (i.e. create a window as a drag-cursor) so the cursor wouldn't jitter due to event propagation or scheduling. Of course the drag-owner would still have to manage transitions and removing the drag-cursor, however users are much less sensitive to transitions than they are to jitter between the hardware cursor and the drag object position.
