This is incorrect.
XFree86 does not have translucent windows, or transparent menus. At
some point Keith played with the feature in his personal tree, just to
get a feel for the issues.
XFree86 does have full (currently unaccelerated) support for
Porter-Duff compositing on the server side (the RENDER extension), but
that's a different thing.
RENDER was included in 4.0.2, but you really should use 4.2.0 and
later for it.
