Looks like the framebuffer device doesn't like the mode the X server
tries to use.

Xfbdev isn't the same as the XFree86 server (as in
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 with the fbdev driver). AFAIK the former doesn't
use a config file but needs to be configured with command line options
instead.

No, in the worst case there's always the void driver. It's certainly not
related to this problem.
