That motion has been floating around for at least 2 years now.  As long as 
Debian dumps truly "non-free" (proprietary, closed-source) software in the 
same category with "semi-free" (to use RMS's definition - often just free 
software with a problematic "don't-charge-anything-for-this" restriction), 
then I don't see non-free going away in Debian in the near future, as there 
are too many DD's who aren't willing to throw out the latter to get rid of the 
former (judging from a recent thread I saw on the issue).

Ummm, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the XFree86 'nv' driver has fewer 
problems compared to NV's 'nvidia' driver, simply because the former doesn't 
*do* much.  :)  'nv' is there just to get you a 2D, unaccelerated X desktop. 
For performance, 2D and 3D, you *have* to use NV's driver.
