here is a simple modification in order to be GPL compatible (since a lot of software already written for X use GPL code)

replace condition #3 of the new license ( http://www.xfree86.org/legal/licenses.html )
with condition #2c of the GPL ( http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html#SEC3 )

in other words simply replace:

"The end-user documentation included with the redistribution, if any, must include the following acknowledgment: "This product includes software developed by The XFree86 Project, Inc (http://www.xfree86.org/) and its contributors", in the same place and form as other third-party acknowledgments. Alternately, this acknowledgment may appear in the software itself, in the same form and location as other such third-party acknowledgments."

with:

" If the modified program normally reads commands interactively when run, you must cause it, when started running for such interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this License. (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on the Program is not required to print an announcement.)"




RATIONALE:
the new license ( http://www.xfree86.org/legal/licenses.html )
states that everyone must display the sentence "This product includes software developed by The XFree86 Project, Inc (http://www.xfree86.org/(...)) and its contributors" in a distro using code covered by the new license (sentence displayed either in the software itself or in the doc)

This is not compatible with the GPL which, besides copyright in sources, states that you must list all the copyright owners in interactive programs, but doesn't state that you have to advertise a specific project or a specific URL.
(remember that the GPL states in #6 that "You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein.")


CONCLUSIONS: Since a lot of programs written for X do include some GPL code, to remain compatible with the GPL would be better !

And since "The Xfree86 Project" already owns a part of the copyrights of this software, the condition #2c (see above) would still advertise the name of the project, as the name of a copyright holder !
