using Xfree86 with linux

hi all,
there seems to be a lot of accusations flying and I'm a bit lost in the
inconpatibilities of licensing.  So I have a specific question.

I have a linux machine.  Obviously I use xfree86 and I reckon it's pretty
damn good at what it deoes. Now, am I allowed to use the new version of
xfree86 with my linux (debian) distro if I get it directly from xfree86?

I understand that client libraries can be linked without problems. I have
no intention of re-distributing anything.

So if I don't get any xfree86 stuff from my distro, and then add it in
myself directly from xfree86.org, is this ok? Or are the incompatibilities
enough that the two differnet software packages cannot co-exist together
on the same machine?

Does my doing the install myself circumvent the license problems and the
advertising clauses? Is this, to some extent, a distributors problem and
one that users can get around?

of course there will be package management issues, but I can live with
that...
