I have exactly the same card, and it works very well with xfree. For 
only one screen, the xfree matrox driver is sufficient.(it's the matrox 
mg400 driver) On linux, the matrox driver and powerdesk work well.
I had only the powerdesk to compile and used the binary modules and 
install shell script for the mga and hal module.
