Migrating away from the XFree86 project

This is intended to be a technical discussion, not a philosophical one about
licenses, etc.

For various reasons, users of XFree86 may now have a desire to migrate away
from the project.  What alternatives exist, and which are people choosing?

For example:

Is the R6.6 tree from x.org practically usable for most end-users, and
distributors?

How many users actually use the more advanced features of X, and how many
just use X as a way to run, for example, applications based on the Qt and GTK
libraries?

I vaguely remember reading about a kde-nox project, but can't find any current
information on it.  Also, wasn't there an effort to port GTK to the Linux
framebuffer?
