I've never said Sun had a problem with the 4.4 license (or for that
matter any publically stated opinion on it of any sort), but we
haven't shipped anything yet covered by it - our current releases
are still based on XFree86 4.3 or older.

I didn't think it was a big secret or surprise - the Java Desktop
System simply uses the SuSE Linux Desktop 1.0 XFree86-4.3.0 packages
(JDS is based on the SLD 1.0 kernel, OS & X layers, with Sun
  providing the higher software layers, including GNOME, Java, and
  various applications that run on top of those.)

Xsun has included the XFree86 implementation of the Render extension
since the Solaris 9 12/02 release, and the XFree86 driver porting kit
has been available on the web for a couple of years, and portions of
it were first included in the Solaris 9 12/02 release.  The X-Resource
extension was recently integrated into Xsun in Solaris Express (aka Solaris
10 alpha & beta release program).  We don't ship  a complete XFree86
implementation on Solaris, just some parts of it.
