Alan, I've been very impressed by your deep knowledge of X.  I was
particularly impressed by the non-X12 comments
you made.  

And so to mend our past fences I offer some ideas:

I think you are hampered because it looks like X.org/Sunw are too closely
tied and too 'closed'.   I think you don't make a case for the value you
could add
because you don't want to give proprietary secrets away.  But that's stuff
and nonsense.  Or
you think that you have to do it.  Ditto.

I think a great service X.org could do is to discuss the destruction of X. 
The compartmentalization
of X.  How to modify it down to the bare bones and load everything in.
Options.  I've always loved that idea
but I'm told it would be an incredible undertaking.  

  I think though that would be a benefit
to all & I think that a great company that SUN that created Java could do
it.  But perhaps the cuts are too deep
now and you don't have the staff...Well then you start throwing out ideas
via X.org and get  the glorious open source
world  to work and venture in them.
