Re: Driver Development vs. X Development

In a way I can see where both sides are coming from, some people want more 
drivers and a better driver model where as other people want a more refined 
powerful X features and model.  My 2 Copper peices,  I would actually like to 
see better driver support and a better driver model.  XFree86 is at a point 
now where X itself is very good, with rendering and other features.  What we 
need now is Driver support.  There are several cards out there that are not 
supported and if they are supported the support isnt that great.  I dont 
agree with the gentleman that said that X is obsolete,  I dont consider any 
type of technology obsolete, I call it vintage or mature.  As for a fork of 
XFree86 if this is where somebody wants to go with it, let em.  It cant hurt 
and maybe he can incorporate or change something thats better than what we 
have.  The other issue about Sun making contributions and using Suns own 
technology in XFree86.  I am a little cautious about this myself.  If we take 
Sun technology and incorporate it, what not to keep Sun from coming back in a 
few years if it starts going bankrupt, to claim Intellectual Property claims, 
similar to what SCO is doing.  I am not saying they would and what I am 
saying would probably never happen in a million years, but I am leary about 
Corporate involvement because if bad gets to worse and they try to claim 
Intellectual Property, they have more funds for counsel than a volunteer 
project does.  But hey, thats why we have a governing body, let them do their 
job and make the choices on what they want to do, although Packard being 
kicked out is not the route to go.
