My feeling is that the mere objective of providing maximum sharing of
rasterised glyphs between separate servers is not your only motivation
for exposing all of your typesetting algorithms at the protocol level.

There are clearly ways to achieve the former without doing the
latter.  (I grant that they are not implemented in current Xft, but as
I said in a previous message, could be if there were demand.)
