Therefor using the built in compression of ssh or equivalent is imho more efficient than putting compression in X11. Things are totally different in the local case. The local case is compared to the network already high bandwidth / low latency. But even in the local case bandwith might be a limiting factor. I think that in the local case improving the IPC mechanism is the main goal. E.g. in contrast to what most people think SYS V SHM is _not_ the fastest IPC mechanism on Linux.
