Actually, I have written accelerator drivers using vendor docs for some dozen
years, and know whereof we both speak.  At one time or another, I've also 
submitted small bug fixes to a couple of XFree86 drivers.

I wasn't applying to become a developer, I was trying to raise discussion of
the issues involved.  I seem to have done so.
