That would require that David have a full time job working
exclusively on XFree86, and receiving reasonable wages for the
job being performed.  No amount of end user donations would reach
the level of funding required for an engineer to work full time,
and even if there were a very large and steady stream of
donations coming in from people, would it be fair that they all
go to one single person?  What about other core team members?  
What about frequent code contributors not on the core team?  It
gets ugly really fast.
