I'm having problems getting full framerates playing a DVD with the
neomagic driver (I currently get about 18-20 fps). There seems to be a
*huge* slowdown when writing to overlay memory, due to two (correct)
writes in NEOCopyYV12Data().
Here's the data; also I've attached is the output of lspci, dmesg and
XFree86.0.log:
- Sony Vaio notebook (PCG-Z505HE)
PIII 450MHz (256k cache, 100MHz fsb)
192M RAM
Neomagic MagicMedia 256AV aka NM2200 with 2.5M video RAM
(lspci seems to indicate that it's on the AGP bus)
- Linux kernel 2.4.18 and Debian unstable
- XFree86 4.2.1 from Debian
I have set OverlayMem to 691200 bytes (720 * 480 * 2 for NTSC DVD).
MTRRs seem to be set:
$ grep Write-combining XFree86.0.log
(==) NEOMAGIC(0): Write-combining range (0xfd000000,0x400000)
(==) NEOMAGIC(0): Write-combining range (0xfd000000,0x400000)
$ cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size= 128MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x08000000 ( 128MB), size= 64MB: write-back, count=1
reg02: base=0xfd000000 (4048MB), size= 4MB: write-combining, count=1
As it stands, the X server consumes 40-50% of the CPU while trying to
play a DVD or vob file with vlc/ogle/xine. I narrowed down the slowdown
to two writes to overlay memory in NEOCopyYV12Data(). If I change it not
to write to overlay memory but to write to a temporary variable instead
(see following diff), the X server then consumes virtually 0% of CPU
(according to top). Of course it's not very useful this way, but it
shows where the bottleneck is.

So the question is, why do these writes chew so much CPU time? Is there
some AGP knob that needs to be set or something? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
