RE: Some very basic How-to needed

I saw those same posts but that's part of the problem, I don't know how
to do specifically what was suggested. I am very experienced in using
computers and hierarchical file systems, I am not afraid of a command
line and I am highly motivated to learn this OS, but I seem to be
spending more time and money than I ever did on any other OS.

 

I did manage to get to XFree86.org and downloaded two files, Xinstall.sh
and Xinstall.bin (the latest version 4.0.3 I think). However, when I
tried to execute the .bin file, it said that I needed to extract it
using extract.exe, but I don't have a clue where to find it or how to
install it. I have no idea what to do with the .sh file.

 

Perhaps you could provide some advice: Maybe I'm just approaching this
incorrectly, but on the newbie sites I always seem to get partial
answers. For example, I don't know how to do a "make World", yet you
refer to it as though you were talking about something that I should
know intrinsically. I have been messing with RedHat Linux since version
6.x, and have read many reference books and manuals about it, yet this
is the first time I have ever heard of  "make World".  Is there some
generally accepted form of inquiry that would elicit a more detailed
response? 

 

Please don't misunderstand, I very much appreciate the assistance, I'm
just a bit frustrated at how steep this learning curve is.

  Someone just asked this same question with a nearly identical
computer, the answer that someone else gave was to get the latest CVS
version of Xfree86 and compile it using the make World and make install.

Hello all,

After years of goofing around with leftover PCs and Frankenstien
combinations of older hardware, I decided to give RedHat Linux 8.0 a new
PC of its
own. I purchased a brand new 1.8ghz Pentium 4 PC from Dell (whitebox
equivalent of Optiplex GX260). The system has an Intel D845GBV
motherboard
with 512MB RAM, 40GB IDE hard drive, integrated audio, video &nic.

I installed RedHat 8 and the video won't work properly. I can't seem to
figure out where to get the drivers (Redhat?,Nope. Intel?, Nope. Dell?,
Forget it...) or even how to adjust the video so that it displays
properly.
I'd hate to run it down at basic 640x480 VGA, but I can't get the GUI to
work well enough to change to that either. The 845 chipset was correctly
ID'd by the GUI installer, so I don't know what the problem is.

It's always been too much work to get Linux running, but I've always
felt
that I've not given it a fair shake. Now I've got a system that would
run
any version of Windows superbly. I've made the effort and the
investment,
and I'm getting pissed off. Please help me if you can.
