xf86 4.x + vmware 3.x window mode

I have vmware working in full screen mode, but not in window mode.
I can"paint" portions of the screen with the cursor in window mode but
it is unusable. Is there a description for this behaviour?

I cannot find any error messages.

card: Intel 815 onboard graphics
os: RedHat 7.2, 7.3, 8.0

I have tested various combinations of Red Hat operating system,
Red Hat XFree86 rpms, and xfree86.org binary distributions.  I
have tried each of the tests with vmware 3.0 and vmware 3.2 wkstn.

RHL7.3 + redhat 2.4.18 + XFree86 4.2.1 rpms breaks window mode
RHL7.3 + kernel.org 2.4.18 + xf86 4.2.0 binaries is ok **
RHL7.3 + kernel.org 2.4.18 + xf86 4.2.1 binaries breaks window mode

With 4.2.0, a vmware guest crash causes X to crash and 4.2.1 resolves
this problem, so I need to run 4.2.1.

I would prefer to use rpms but will use xfree86 binaries if it is possible
to resolve this problem.
