Thank you Lionel . I tried already to test launching of the server ( KDE or 
GNOME ) but both cause the same hang up .

It might be something related with the Red Hat distribution , because this 
morning I installed the Suze 7.2 , and everything was all right .

I know it is not very conscientious to just try a complete reinstall 
without debugging in details , but my time and my knowledge is short . My 
problem was shared by others, as I could see in Internet, but I could never 
see the answers . I think it might be related with the "automatic 
configuration" of the Red Hat distribution , I tried with no success the 
reinstall from virgin hard disk of Red Hat version 8  and another install 
of  version 7.1 . It is the first time I notice a difference the two 
distributions . My next step would have been the Debian distribution .
I saw one answer that said to recompile the Xserver , it could produce a 
binary closer to the machine ....
