How to capture pixel map of the local display as a movie

I'm not sure if this is the correct list to ask this.

I would like to 'record' my program at 1024x768 resolution as a video 
file (mpeg or some other standard format). Is there a way to do this?

I perhaps could hack it and save many frames as pixel mapps with a 
scripts then piece them together after, but i thought perhaps there is a 
  more eligant solution.

I found a windows program that can do something similar as an AVI file, 
but I would rather use this nice XFree86 i have :)
