The "official" mozilla bits don't use Xft or the Render extension, nor do they support subpixel decimation. Chris Blizzard occasionally builds a version of Mozilla that does use Xft: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/experimental/xft/ This doesn't use XftConfig as it's based on Xft2 -- it installs a private fonts.conf file (which you can link to the regular /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file).
