You should just drop support for core fonts; they're no longer necessary on any system. Then you can switch elvis to a pure UTF-8 internal encoding and move translation to the file system interface where it belongs. You'll also want to investigate the adventures of FcFontSort so that elvis can draw arbitrary strings of Unicode text. Pango and Mozilla have examples of this particular function; I'm still considering how to wrap this in a convenient Xft package for mere mortal applications.
