Sensible fonts include both horizontal and vertical metrics; Xft (2) 
has a setting asking to use the vertical metrics.  I don't recall whether 
those include both origin and escapement vectors though.  Aside from that, 
there's not much Xft can do on it's own, unless you've got an algorithmic 
suggestion for placement.
