Didn't LXDE do a little bit more than just fireup Openbox? My
suggestion was, that probably there was either configuration done and
saved or there is additional mechanism for executing some kind of
screen discovery. As an experiment you could boot up your machine,
start not wmaker, not LXDE but the openbox and see what happen.

I utilize several displays nowadays, but didn't experienced behaviour
you've described, or indeed, you're failed in providing a scenario
for bug reproducing.
