Not a very good measure of popularity, that - I haven't downloaded a
window maker release in ages, but I've been using it since 0.12,
thanks to Debian's archives. I also haven't hit the window maker web
page for ages, and I imagine most other users haven't, simply
because there's very little need if your distro packages it for you.

I doubt there's any way you can reasonably measure usage of
something like window maker without putting a call-home 'feature' in
it.
