I have the same issue here, running X.org 6.8.2. It turned out that it wasn't really Xft that was failing, but a misconfiguration of the freetype detection... which in turn led to the "bad Xft" error. What worked for me was to do: CPPFLAGS="`freetype-config --cflags`" ./configure --my-options HTH, Jonathan -- The address I use for posting may not be read regulary.
