I guess too many late nights--I didn't read well what began above the "bad exit 
status" error, namely the problem with "fontsimple."  Reading previous posts 
about fontsimple-associated, compile problems has lead me to suspect that I 
need to update my fontconfig-dev version from 2.1 to 2.2. Same posts mentioned 
that I also need libfreetype-dev. But I can't find a RedHat-9 rpm for it. Do I 
actually need libfreetype-dev? I did locate a Mandrake rpm, but am reluctant to 
use it--or should I be?
