Some time ago I tried wmsystray and can only say : "maybe some day..."

Sorry - wmsystray is nice idea, but totally not functional right now.

Anyway - I suggest to you using fbpanel / pypanel for tray notification
app. Both provides some more options, that dont exist in wmaker itself.
