Thank you to Torbjörn and Sketch.  I tried installing 7.1 on my new laptop and when I started X I'm getting a fatal error.  I think I'm trying to run old software on new hardware.  Kinda like taking  1 step forward and 2 back.  I'm going to download Fedora and start from there.  Thanks for helping to control the bleeding.  My head feels better now.
