.Xdefaults is _not_ meant to be loaded into the Xserver, .Xresources is  
for that purpose. .Xdefaults represents an old mechanism, when  
resources stored in the Xserver were still unknown and today should  
only be used for resources that depend not on the display used but the  
host that the app is running on.

For the reasons given above, .Xresources will be loaded by almost all  
programs meant to manage the Xserver (kde session manager, most window  
managers or the associated start scripts etc.) and .Xresources only  
needs to be in placed and not loaded by the user explicitly.

If .Xresources is changed, it is recommended to use xrdb -merge instead  
of xrdb -load (because other programs might have changed the resources  
in the Xserver).
