When you say "play well", you need to be more specific.  Any file 
manager can move files around.

But NONE of them will give you a satisfying experience and integration 
with the window maker background functions. Generally, if you want 
WindowMaker type integration with the background, then you have to turn 
off several features in the file manager / visual shell.  I have 
different pictures on  different workspaces, and in order to preserve 
that, I have to sacrifice icons on the background.

The Gnome file manager Nautilus does not work well if you allow Nautilus 
to control the background. If you do that, you can't have Window Maker 
control pictures and you also lose the WindowMaker root menu (any click 
on background). If you turn off background setting by Nautilus, then it 
is OK. Of course, there are no icons allowed on the Window Maker 
background and many of our locals are bothered by that.

If you run Gnome, I posted a script a while ago here called 
gnome.wmaker.inst and it knits together hacks needed to make Nautilus 
coexist with WIndowMaker in our Lab.

RoxFiler is a possibility, but if you turn on their pinboard function 
for background icons, then you lose the WindowMaker backgrounds.

Its really a shame that the people who run those big desktop projects 
decided to have the file manager programs manage the background, rather 
than having the window managers do it.  It is a hassle.
