Wow! TkDesk. Really?

That was the only workable gui file manager back in 1996, when I started 
in linux, but I thought it had died about 2000.

I would bet that anything based on Tk will be somewhat slow and 
graphically tedious if you are used to something like Windows Explorer.

It seems to me you should tell us what kind of file manager you like. 
Unless you give us some hints, then we will keep coming up with more and 
more programs you can test and waste your time on.

If you have a linux distro with Gnome, I would seriously suggest using 
"nautilus" and just turn off its parts that conflict with WindowMaker.
I can tell you exactly what is required.

If your linux has KDE, you could use their file manager.  To me, it 
looks almost exactly like Windows 98.  Maybe that's just my memory 
fooling me.

Many of the others people have suggested are OK and do run safely. Top 
on this list, consider
xfe

Rox filer is quite nice.

And the file manager from the XFCE desktop, xffm, works OK too.

Only "nautilus" and the KDE file manager are likely to cause 
configuration hassles.

There are RPMS or DEBs available for all of these, and so installing 
them and testing should be easy.  Don't let yourself get drawn into the 
hassle of trying to compile some cutting edge program unless you really 
know what you are doing.  Quite often, I find myself spending an 
afternoon compiling prerequisite support libraries and only later find 
out that a program is still considered too unstable to use.  Any file 
manager based on the Enlightenment development libraries, for example, 
falls into that category.  Although you can get RPMS from Didier Case's 
web site for the Enlightenment snapshots, you should be warned that 
these are under heavy development.
