xfe looks interesting, and I will instead try it. TkDesk is not catching 
my interest.

I am not running Windowmaker on Linux, I am on FreeBSD. I tried Gnome in 
  the early days, and used it for a while, but I did not like the way it 
and Nautilus moved over time.

Tried a few others, including Enlightenment and Xfce. Enlightenment is 
interesting, including 17, but as you mentioned is always under heavy 
development, a big moving target. Needs to settle a bit.
Xfce is nice and stable, but I wanted something else.
Played with KDE a long while, still like it, but wanted to try something 
different and after looking around, Windowmaker caught my attention.
I do like Konqueror as a file manager, but I do not want all else that 
has to come with it, just to use it.

So as mentioned above the xfe manager looks interesting, lite, and I 
will give it a try.
