I've been using wmaker for about as long as you.  Before that, FVWM
was my main Linux desktop.  I find myself trying other things about
once a year, but always end up back with wmaker -- last month I stuck
it out with KDE for almost two weeks before throwing my hands up in
frustration.

I like the idea of having a fully integrated desktop "environment",
but everything either feels either like a bad Windows clone or like
it's trying too hard to just be different from everything else with no
regard for usability.

What I like about wmaker and miss everywhere else:  The dock and dock
apps, app icons for running applications, and being able to minimize
windows to icons (miniwindows).  A windows-style taskbar just doesn't
work for me.  Also, being able to hide all windows of an application
with a single keystroke is pretty damn good.

What I don't really care for with wmaker:  The right-click desktop
application menu.  90% of all apps that I use are in my dock.  The
rest get launched from an xterm.  But this menu doesn't get in the
way, so it's no big deal.

I suppose the real answer to the question of why I use wmaker instead
of anything else is a bit cyclical (and is probably the same reason
why I use Vi as my editor).  It works well, and I'm using it because
I've been using it for a long time -- it's just hardwired into my
brain now.
