Well, there's an explanation at http://windowmaker.org/lists.html:

The mailing list archives have been broken since October 2002.
Basically, new messages haven't been getting archived, and the search
engine is broken. We are in the process of correcting this situation.
By the end of February 2004, we will have a new web-based searchable
archive of all the lists (dating as far back as 1998).

Thus, old archives are broken. New ones are accessible at
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.compw.window-managers.windowmaker.user and
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.compw.window-managers.windowmaker.devel
