One convenient way to simulate to some extent what the OP requested - 
two-dimension switching - is to define twenty workspaces, eg. and bind 
convenient keys to "Switch to next/previous ten workspaces". You thus 
wind up with what amounts to a grid of two rows and ten columns of 
workspaces. So if you bind - eg. Alt+LeftArrow and Alt+RightrArrow to 
prev/next workspace and Alt+UpArrow and Alt+DownArrow to next/previous 
ten workspaces you can easily switch back and forth between row one and 
two as well as between adjacents columns.

To try and clarify this w/o resorting to ascii art: suppose you are on 
ws-2.. you can switch between ws-2 and ws-1 or ws-2 and ws-3 (nothing 
new here..) but also between ws-2 and ws-12. And once you are on ws-12 
you can switch to ws-11 or ws-13.. from which you can switch back to 
your first row (ws-1... ws-2.. ws-3..). I haven't tried that myself but 
you could take this a step further by creating thirty workspaces which 
would provide you with three groups of 3x3 workspaces plus change - 
maybe one for internet/email activities.. another for shells.. local and 
remote.. and a third for video/graphics possibly. You could then 
navigate these 3x3 matrices via the Alt-Arrow key combos discussed above 
- or Alt+<ijkl> if you happen to be a vimmer... Naturally nothing stops 
you from changing the default workspace names Workspace 1, 2, 3, 11, 12, 
13, 21, 22, 23.. to something that reinforces the "matrix view"  - maybe 
something that pre/suff-ixes the matrix name with cardinal points so you 
could end up with I-S.. I-NW.. I-W.. I-SW.. II-E.. I-SE.. etc.. and of  
course you could use wmaker's theme-ing capabilities and give each 
matrix (sub-desktop) a different background.

Since there is no explanation by the original poster of why it would be 
highly desirable for him, I have no idea if this helps but I thought I'd 
add my two cents..
