Backpacking Background: I have been backpacking for approximately 20 years. I started backpacking as a young teenager with my local Boy Scouts of America troop, and trekked all over the Sierra Nevada’s in Southern California, the Cascades of the Pacific Northwest, the Wasatch Range in Utah, and the Continental Divide area of the Rockies in Colorado. Additionally, I was in the US Army for 9 years, and have some experience in southern Europe, Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountain range, and Northern Iraq. Due to my location, I am most often found in the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest, Mt. Hood National Forest, and the Olympic National Park in WA and OR. These forests/parks are some of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen, and am excited to devote the rest of my life exploring all the trails they have to offer.

First Impression: I had the good fortune to have this sleeping pad demonstrated in a store by a representative from Klymit. I tend to not buy into the sales pitch, but this bag really impressed me during the “pitch” because it was light weight, appeared to be durable, and I was assured that it would accommodate my girth. When I sampled the bag in the store, I was not entirely certain of the thickness of the pad would remove a lot of the discomfort that comes from sleeping on uneven ground vs. sampling it on a flat table, but I liked the price and bought one. The pad came in the cinch sack, has a patch kit included, and was about half the size of a Nalgene bottle, or a little bigger than a soda can.

 Field Information

 Location of Use:

 Utah
Mirror Lake, Ashley National Forest, Utah
Ashley National Forest is located in northeastern Utah and Wyoming. It is rugged forest, with a lot of uneven ground. I was camping near Mirror Lake at 10,500ft (3,200m). Temperatures at night were often hovering around 40̊ F (4.5̊ C).
The sleeping pad performed very well during the entire trip. It was able to absorb the rocks/twigs that I was unable to move out of the way, and it kept me warm during the relatively cool nights.
 Bear Lake, Utah/Idaho Border
Bear Lake is a large scenic lake often called "Caribbean of the Rockies" for its intense turquoise blue water. The climate is very warm in the summer, due to it being in the high desert, and the temperature is often in excess of 100̊F (37.8̊C). However, night time temperatures got down to approximately 35̊F (1.7̊C).
Despite the low temperatures, and sleeping on the sandy beach near the shoreline, this sleeping pad kept me warm from underneath.
 Washington
 Mt Rainier National Forest, Washington
Mt Rainier National Forest is what many people would consider to be a “rain” forest. Due to this, there is a vast amount of woody deadfall covered by a healthy layer of walk slowing “wait-a-minute” vines. There is almost always rain, and the ground is very moist throughout the entire year.
Due to the wet nature of the forest, this pad was a good fit. It kept me dry and dried very fast when I was able to hang it out.

 Summary

The Klymit Static V2 Inflatable Sleeping Pad is a solid performer due to many features. As advertised this pad will inflate with 15-20 breaths, and the rugged design will keep you warm and comfortable for many years. There are quite a few alternatives available to use as a sleep pad, but this is an awesome start for those that want a lightweight, backpackable, sleeping pad.

 Things I like:

 Very lightweight
 Quick drying
Doesn’t take up a lot of room
Durable fabric that has not needed to be patched after 3 years
 Wide dimensions for bigger hikers

 Things I dislike:

Low insulation for winter camping (three season only)
Valve broke (due to dog chewing on it about two weeks ago), and there is only a two year warranty (not sure if dog chewing on valve is covered by warranty anyway)
