Hey Chris,
I pretty much agree with Bill. Just carrying his bag and pad will load him up enough. 'Corse you get the pack mule duty...
My thoughts only . . .

For what it's worth, 15 pounds sounds like a lot for a 6 year old. My son started young, but it wasn't until he was in his early teens that he was able to carry an appreciable amount. If you want him to have fun, I'd suggest getting his pack down to just a few pounds, and even then, being prepared to strap it to your own if his back or shoulders start to get sore.
Best,
Bill S.

Folks,
I'm preparing to take a solo trip to Yosemite or I may take my 6 yr old. Can any of you recommend a weekend trip with decent water availability and moderate to strenuous hiking. If I go alone I can cover 8-15 miles a day pretty easily, if i take my little guy he tops out at about 5-7 one way.
My base pack weight is about 9-11 lbs depending on my layers with water and food my bear canister I come in about 23lbs. My son's total weight including water is 15 lbs.
Any Ideas?
