Reservations are typically done months in advance, but here's how reservations work.

But I'm never good at at planning such things and even when I think I know where I'm going I can change my mind in midstream so it doesn't matter that I may get sent up some other trail rather than the one I wanted when I show up at the permit office, it's all good.

But it does mean that I go to Yosemite only if I'm going to do a multi-day trip, since the overhead of going thru the permit office is a bit much for an overnight trip. The wilderness areas north of Yosemite are just as scenic and there isn't that overhead, plus they're just as easy to reach from the Bay Area, so ...
