I try to live the same type of lifestyle.  This sounds like something I might have wrote.  I use a commercial blend of oils that has castor, rosemary, lemongrass, cedar, peppermint, citronella, clove and geranium oils in it.  It may not last as long as DEET but it definitely smells better.
