This was interesting so I investigated more thoroughly. I had never heard of Picaridin. It is also sold under the brand name "Repel". It seems like it is the active ingredient in Avons and almost as effective as DEET and about as toxic or non-toxic depending on what way you look at it. It does not smell as bad as DEET. Another effective product is Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus - the only plant based ingredient recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and lasts twice as long as typical herbal oils.
