I own both the REI Half Dome and the Quarter Dome.  I own the original model of each of these and they have changed significantly since then and are now lighter. Unless the persona I was tenting with was very used to tight spaces I think they would prefer the 1/2 dome. It is not ultra light, not even light but I love the design of it and have contemplated cloning it in ultralight materials.  It has huge vestibules and sufficient head room to spend time in.  I have found that in driving rain more water gets in the 1/4 dome tent when getting in and out. Also the 1/4 dome vestibules are smaller, adequate, but small especially for inexperienced hikers.     

If I only could get one of these I would get the 1/2 dome over the 1/4 dome.  Maybe the new models of the 1/4 dome have improved but I can't imagine the 1/2 dome n eeding to except in material choice for weight reasons.

I am thinking of getting one of these tents:  REI Quarter Dome, Big Agnes Jack Rabbit or REI Half Dome.  I live in Alaska and using the tent for basic backpacking.  It would probably be for my wife (if she comes) and my son (if he is around as he is going to college now). I could not find specs on REI's site for weight, height, etc.   Any input is welcome.
