You can pitch the quarter dome fly by itself if you have the footprint - the poles will insert into grommets at the edges of the footprint.  If you don't need bug protection, it's not a bad way to go.  But for what it's worth, I almost never use the footprint except when car camping. If I were just going to pitch the fly, I'd use a tarp instead.  And when I am planning to use the full tent, I save 1/4 lb by using a polycryo groundcloth instead of the stock footprint.
