Maybe I've just been lucky, or maybe there's just been less sharp stuff where I camp, but I'm going on ~ 10 weeks with one piece of polycryo (from GG) and it's still good as new. Ditto on hard to clean when packing up, though. If I don't have time to dry it, I just fold it in half with the wet side in, shove it in the mesh pouch, and deal with it later or just lay it down the next night wet side down.

I purchased a polycro ground sheet from Gossamer Gear along with their tarp.  I found that it does tear easily, but is very lightweight.  Note: the material is shrink wrap that is used for wrapping pallets and boxes for shipment and therefore stretchs, but does tear.  As a fix I put a layer of duct tape on each corner (where it tore on my first trip) and punched a small hole in each corner.  I use light alum tent stakes through the holes to hold it down and to keep it from balling up while I move around on it.  I have also found it hard to clean off when packing it up, especially if the gound was moist and water has accumlated on one side (everything sticks to it and it tends to stick to itself).  Because it is so light weight it is difficult to shake it out. (it also difficult to layout in the wind)
 
If I was going to use it for a long trip, I think I would get a piece of Tyvek or a piece of Slinylon.
