The ULA Potti Trowel as designed to do the Job, use the right tool for the right job.  If I had a need for an ice axe I'd take one, and leave the trowel home as my ice axe would function well as a "cat hole digger" and save some weight.  If I knew I wouldn't encounter snow/ice I'd leave the heavier piece of equipment home and save some additional weight.  But the logic of taking the trowel to save my butt in a slide and to save weight lacks some common sense.
