Some questions first:

1) How experienced are you at setting up tarps in the rain/dark?
2) Did you mean Gatewood Cape instead of Gateway?
3) Did you each have a cape? and was the tarp additional protection?
4) What were your food choices? cold camp food or hot?
5) What other gear did you bring? 
6) how soon did you soak through compared to sweating out?  In other words were you wetter from sweating or rain or did it matter?
7) Did you have other insulation choices for sleeping?
8) What are your and your partners experiences hiking/camping in rain and elevation?
9) Did you go out with the attitude of bailing if it became too much or did it come to you once you were at the camping site?


Anyways these answers will go a long way to us making suggestions without making conjectures about you or your gear.
