I would add that is is not always a minimalist approach that we take but a comprehensive use of equipment suited to the trip and our personal preferences. Lightening up is a process, a very enjoyable process of playing with gear. Read Don's book. Sure, I can get under 10lbs before food and water for 5 days in the Sierras. But I sacrifice the comfort items that enhance my experience. I prefer to be around 15-20lbs. My suggestion is to take all of your gear out that you normally carry. Weigh it. Go on a nice overnight to your favorite location and when you get home spread it all out into three piles. Gear you used because you need it (include route finding and first aid in this pile). Gear you took because you like it. All of the extra stuff you carried and didn't even touch. Take the need it pile and look for lighter alternatives in your budget. Weigh what you like and look for lighter alternatives. All of the extra what if stuff, leave it in a box next time. Brian H Folsom, CA
