I just wanted to add my 2c. I have both a Kindle (older keyboard type) and a Kobo (backlight version, three days old). I love them both for different reasons, though I haven't had the Kobo long enough to feel comfortable backing it. Either way, the software called Calibre is the way to go. It's free/open source, works on mac and PC, and essentially allows you to keep a "library" on your computer and manage whatever ereaders you connect. Anything not DRM'd can be easily shuffled, (and those that are can be with a little skill) and it converts ebook formats (epub, mobi etc.) automatically.
