Here in Northern CA the REI stores have what they call a "garage sale" or scratch and dent sale about 4 times a year for each store. Good for me as there are 3 stores within 25 miles. The trick I have found is to go in Saturday and look around to see what you like, then ask how long the sale is and when the discounts start. The local store here in Folsom takes another 25-50% off most items on Sunday about an hour before they close the back room sales area. Crazy deals to be had if you know what you are looking for. Many times I have bought broken items at huge discounts (example MSR Dragonfly stove for $10, North Face insulated jacket with blown seam $10) and either repaired at home or shipped back to the company for warranty repair. Since REI has a very generous return policy, they get a lot of returns that need to be sold at a deep discount. The stock turns over quickly so you can check back and often find exactly what you need.
